Diesel to Petrol~ and vice versa

Post by matt brighton »

Hi

Not quite as straightforward as keeping same side of the fence fuel wise.......

Im going from 1.9 diesel (originally a 1.6CS/currently 1.9 skoda diesel) to 2.0 Petrol (subaru using RJES kit).

I sold my engine to a member who's going from 2.1 petrol.

Apart from remembering to put correct fuel in I thought it might be helpful to mention a few things we have come across that might not be immediately apparent that need changing

Petrol to diesel.... you will need the donor vans
bell housing,
engine cradle bars,
sump (obviously) and
input shaft. -
Expansion bottle

Not 100% sure about gearbox mount as diesel mount positions the engine differently to petrol

Diesel to petrol (Subaru)

2.1 injection system = fuel tank which has swirl pot , supply/return pipes ,(bigger bore) and and associated filler neck etc (its a different diameter) - about £200

Electrics - Early diesels don't have VW plug connectors to plumb in the connections to all components such as alternator/temp sender - oil light

If we come across any other wrinkles I will post them here.

If you know of any then pl add so it might help anyone else doing a swap :ok

What are the reasons to switch from the diesel battery position in the engine bay to the petrol variants that sits under the drivers seat? Is it the petrol needs the extra space in the engine bay or am I missing something else?

Yeah the battery and platform it sits on will get in the way, you will have to make up a long starter cable .

Richard mentioned that some tuck it in behind the rear light.

.. its a bit tight for access, but then again, how often should you need to remove the battery - unless somethings up with the charging system ?
