Subaru NP wires

Post by mshaw1980 »

Can anyone provide me with a picture of the wires/connectors near the Subaru ecu marked as NP? They may either be plugged in or not.

Can't find them on mine so don't know if the writing has rubbed off.

Needed as Richard Jones has mentioned that this can affect the vehicle speed sensor.

Thanks

Is that a JDM engine ?

I've checked my notes, the nearest one to that I've seen is a 1996 2.2, three plugs. The NPS was a light-green/black wire on pin 9 of the 16-pin connector, the bottom right-hand pin.

Thanks for the response Andy

Engine apparently came from a 1998, 2.0 N/A impreza.

What exactly is an NP or NPS? Hate not knowing what people are talking about even if it wont help me at all as my electrical skills are ok but not advanced :ok

The ECU date code 6620 suggests a 96 year of manufacture.

NPS stands for neutral position switch. With an ECU from a manual trans car this is normally left floating (not earthed), if its connected incorrectly, a typicaly symptom is a reluctance to quickly drop to idle revs.

This is all the advice/info I can offer, as you've not actually mentioned what your issue is ?

The engine cuts out when coming to a stop, my eg33 has a similar problem but only seems to happen when the engine is fully warmed up.

If your harness has an OBD port you could use ECUexplorer or FreeSSM to check for faults, check the ECU is seeing your VSS signal etc. I don't know if a '96 JDM 2l has OBD though. Another option is to use a multimeter with a frequency input to check the VSS signal you are sending to the ECU is a valid speed signal.
