Non T3 issue. Got a vibrating Golf.

Post by captain Byrne »

My daily drive is a Golf Mk6. I had the two front tyres replaced a few days ago & since then, when the car is driven at speed - not crazy speeds but lets just say a tad over 70, there is an intermittent but regular vibration that I can feel throughout the car. It lasts for a few seconds but then stops for a few seconds, starting again for a few seconds and so on. This regular pattern is consistently maintained until I slow down to a speed of under 70ish. I initially assumed the wheels hadn't been balanced properly & have since taken it back & had all four re-balanced but the problem persists.
Ideas anyone? Cheers.

It can be caused by dry CV joints. Hopefully, the tyres were checked for any tread distortion.

Thanks, tyres were done at Halfords so I doubt they were checked for tread distortion.
How easy to check the CV joints? There's no obvious play, so is there a method to find out which one is causing the vibration?

You should be able to move them from side to side relatively easily best to do it with the wheels on the ground. The only sure way is to peel back the boots and have a nosey.

They've done them twice. The new tyres fitted are Bridgstone T005. I'm begining to suspect one of them is faulty as the car ran smoothly before they were fitted. Had a look at CV joints & bearings - all tight.

I had a similar problem with the van, 15" alloys and cyclic vibration at different speeds that came and went, regardless of balancing checks.
Turned out that the wheel rims were slightly flatted/dented (remarkably common as it turns out) so I had them refurbished and all was well.
