fuel pump and fuel filter - before or after?

Post by mariner »

Hi all. My fuel pump packed up today and I need to replace it asap. :o

It’s a Waldro gsl 393 and there’s not any around that I can get in the next day or so. Is the 392 okay as an option? Although these also take a good while to be delivered.

Can anyone recommend a seller or an alternative fuel pump? Cheers, John.

fuel pump and fuel filter - before or after?

Post by mariner »

Hi all. Managed to find a supplier of the 393. Manufacturer’s instructions suggest mounting the filter before the pump. This isn’t how it’s set up now or match the diagram on RJES. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Cheers.

Mine are after the pump, same as vw fuel injection with the big filter.

Cheers Multi. Yeah, mine is currently after it. Don’t know whether it’s connected but the fuel in my tank is currently coming out a reddish/brown colour  not good!

It could be old fuel if you havnt used the van for a long time and it only had a small amount of fuel in. Or it could be rust which could damage the pump, did you put a new fuel inj tank in when you did the conversion or is that the original tank ?

You've got rust in there, which you need to get rid of.

Normal approach is to have an in tank coarse filter / strainer, then pump, then replaceable fine filter.

I have seen situations where a new Bosch pump was fitted to a tank with rust problems and it failed within an hour. I don't know what a Waldro pump is, but if it's for an injection system it'll be a similar design to the Bosch with similar tight clearances

ps... sorry, but that's probably the reason why your pump packed up earlier today

My first thought was rust too. Is there anyway round this that doesn’t involve a new tank?? :(

There are a few options, essentially chemical (rust converter) or mechanical (stuff in the tank, swirl it around to remove the rust).

The problem with both is it depends what is inside the tank and what damage can you do with either method. (plastic components, filter membranes, getting the abrasives out)

TBH, you're going to have to remove the tank to clean it, and as a new tank is only £86.50 I think you'll find a new tank is quicker and cheaper.........and probably cheaper than another pump. https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/ ... -late.html Bosch are easily that price.

Before you buy, how old is the fuel

ps make sure you have the correct tank too

The van is used most days and I topped it up this morning so the fuel isn’t old. I’ll get the garage to drop the tank tomorrow and get a replacement - I’m assuming it is the late or injection tank and as the engine is injected I’m hoping it’s the later! How do I tell the difference as the filler neck opening is obviously the same on both tanks?

The garage have already said the pump is a gonna. It would push the fuel to engine after the terraclean so think that’ll need replacing too :( is there a Bosch model you can recommend?

Cheers for all your help here - on a bad run with the van at mo

Bosch 044 is what is referred to as the motorsport pump, higher delivery volume than normal, but your garage will need to make sure all the fittings work (different thread sizes, electrical connections etc). Make sure it comes from a reputable source too.

You'/ your garage will need to determine what tank you currently have fitted, I think there are three types, early, late and injection, Brickwerks I think have them all.

Have a read here https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/brickwerks ... -gubbings/ and get the breather system hoses replaced while the tank is out

And best to fit new hose aswell, my locally bought injection hose started to split really quickly.
