Hi guys!

I blew the head gasket on my 1.6D a while back, and I'm finally in a financial position to repair it.

Rather than strip it down, send off the head for skimming etc etc, I'm just going to buy a replacement engine from my local dismantlers.

Currently fitted with a CS engine, would there be much needed modification-wise to change it to a JX? Give it a little extra oomph and raise the MPG.

I went for the Skoda felecia 1.9d na... its the AEF engine.....

It was an easy swap and guide from Colin the Fox was a blessing...

Very pleased with the improvement over the 1.6

Not an answer to your question but your local breaker might have one available

I would change it for a 1.9NA as said - I put a 1Y in mine, no faffing about with turbo bits. Mine came out of a 1998 Caddy. A JX would be old and tired and if you can't rebuild it yourself I would say it is too much work when you get the same power from a 1.9 with far less work.

I can organise shipping for you.. Rowlsey is a mate of mine, and his AEF is one from my stock.. They are great engines.

I also have three more engines due to be ready in the next few weeks, 2xAEF and 1x1Y

The 1.9 is a lovely unstressed upgrade from a 1.6 or a tired JX

use ALL your 1.6 manifolds

I have the 1.9aef from a 1999 Polo.
Looking forward to fitting bigger wheels now so I can go faster at lower revs.

merc ML's wheels work well chap, 16" and good choice of tyre sizes..
Just don't go too big as the leap in gearing will be too much for country lanes

I agree with everything said so far. AEF or 1Y is the way to go. And when you can, 10% longer gearing by bigger wheels or gearbox mods will produce more leisurely cruising.

Be very careful to have a properly sealed air inlet tract to keep your new engine quiet.

Other than a properly sealed inlet tract, and of course soundproofing the engine bay, is there anything else one can do to help keep them quiet?

That's basically it, (all things being equal, the 1.9 engine has a similar noise level to the 1.6) but sound deadening over the gearbox area,whether the tinware undertray is fitted, where you store the bedding, what you have under the back seat, whether the air inlet tract vibrates against the bodywork, the exhaust system and its mounts, all play a marginal role in keeping the noise down.

Colin what tyres are you running? I've just bought some 16 inch toliman alloys...thinking about 195 75 r16s...

I've just done a GTi conversion and the customer wants new wheels and tyres. After much discussion we ended up with Wolfrace 16x6.5 alloys (right ET of 33 so no spacers needed) and 205/65R16 Pirellis. It's a modest but useful increase in rolling circumference, a slightly lower sidewall for slightly firmer handling through the twisties, and slightly wider footprint for improved grip and braking without making steering too much heavier. Both the wheels and tyres are amply load rated for van use. Not fitted yet but I'm hoping it'll be a subtle but noticeable improvement in all respects.
The spare will have cheap 205/80R14C fitted to ensure similar circumference.
