Waltraud AGG from DG conversion starting

Post by waltraud »

:D I’m preparing for an AGG instal in my 83 DG Westy. Have read lots of threads and decided to be well prepped so not too much time off the road! Thanks to Graham Bunt for supplying a low miles engine with ancillaries and ready prepared loom[COLLISION SYMBOL][THUMBS UP SIGN].

I’m putting together all the bits I’ll need right now and have already had help from here, thanks all.

I’ll post up lots of pics along the way too. Here’s a few of preparations.....

My main dilemma is having to do it on the street outside my house in Hackney , for example cars are parked close so I my not have lots of room for an engine hoist, but if I don’t use one will the wood and ratchet method to lift the engine in from the floor be adequate or be less manageable? And if I go this way should I bolt the engine bars up to the engine and its mounts first then (once the input shaft is in) pull the whole lot up and do up the engine mounts to chassis?

I have ramps, tools, welder, (inner rear chassis in engine bay needs attention.) bellhousing, bars, mounts, stuff and more....to start soon or leave until warmer in spring[EYES]?

Etch primer then satin black top coat for a few fixtures and fittings- exhaust bracket, clutch slave bracket and coil mount/ throttle cable conduit.

This weekend swap sumps on the AGG and other prep jobs.

Anyone got a spare diesel clutch operating arm, the external one (not the cross shaft) ?

Today I’ve taken the gti sump off, the oil pump can be disassembled easily into two parts. The body of the pump with gears in needs to remain (the gti one) but the pickup needs to be swapped for the jx one. It’s two bolts.

Question, the crimped cover on the end of the oil pickup moves slightly , is that ok? I can see it’s only there as protection?

Q2- the gti sump had a plastic baffle fitted to the end of the pickup but this will not fit on the jx pick up pipe. Any losses here to run without the baffle? Thanks. Have high tensile Allen head m8x16 for the sump fitting.

First time I've been used as an engine hoist!

Hope pavement was cleared before dark.

Let me know if you need me for the insertion of the new engine.

Cheers Patrick, all clear, a few parts now sold which will helpfully fund an injection tank and fuel line. It’s all the bits n bobs add up.

Cheers. Yes, i’m planning to run it on Blos powered LPG, simple and less expensive but very responsive. If you’ve not seen or heard about Blos it’s really a great system. Just waiting on parts from Brickwerks to rebuild clutch crossshaft on diesel bellhousing.

No, you won't need that bit of loom.
Did you use longer sump bolts? Ideally the ones from the donor diesel engine. The golf ones are too short to go through the thicker ally sump.
