EWP (electric water pump) radiator

As a few of you know, ive fought (and lost) an ongoing battle with overheating on my Syncro. Talking to a few people around Busfest and other places, I came to the realisation that the problem was'nt so much radiator size, but water flow too and from the radiator. So I have just installed an EWP (electric water pump) from a company in Australia, Davies Craig. It came with a digital controller to regulate the pump speed dependant on the water temperature. It will also control the extra radiator fan I installed . I really hope this works, but so far so good, at tickover the temperature just stays put!! Only time and use will tell. Not cheap but if BMW and others use this pump, it cant be too bad.

Does this replace the mechanical pump on the engine?

Never had an overheating problem with the 2.6 SA...

There is no need for any extra pumps if the 5 cylinder engine and cooling system are installed correctly. Even at 42c it dose not need exta pumps. There is another issue there somewhere.

Geoff I will try to dig out some engine bay pics of mine, it might help you to work out if you have a bypass loop problem (too much coolant taking the easy route) or some other problem.
Questions: thick core 2.1 radiator fitted? 88 degree thermostat? Oil interwarmer?
Can ypu post up a pic of your engine bay (the SU carb wont scare me!)

Waterpump on 5-cyl ohc engines is also the cambelt tensioner

Well the waterflow with the extra pump in series with the existing mechanical pump really apears to shift the water around more, judging by the header tank movement. It cant be a bad thing as there is a temperature sensor that cuts the EWP in and down as needed. I think its always been an issue with my audi engine installation as there was a seperate water temperature guage fitted when I bought the van. and if memory serves me right it used to pulse at about 120c which I think is a bit high. Anyway Ian your comment about the bypass hoses being over used could well be the problem but as long as I have overcome the overheating that will do for me.

There isnt a thermostat fitted as it was impossible to bleed the system with one fitted. Again there was'nt one fitted when I bought the van, but I did fit one and then found it impossible to bleed. Yes thick core radiator fitted.

The pipework is a bit all over the place, and extra LPG pipes also installed. Its a plumbers nightmare, I doubt its anything like a proper SA 2.6

Sounds iffy Geoff! There shouldnt be any flow through the pressure/header tank...
I will find some pics over the weekend

Thanks Ian. took the van out and gave it a good 10 mile run and the temperature keeeps low now. If it sits idling for a long period the standard low fan cuts in as it should. Have now conected up the extra auxillary electric fan thru a relay controlled via the digital EWP unit, so see how it goes. Agitation in the pressure tank has always been evident on my installation!

Drove a couple of hundred miles over the weekend mid wales, ok it wasnt off road but lots of long slog hills, and the temperature difference to prior fitting was incredible, In fact I had to dial up the cut in temperature to 90c as it was running a bit too cold!! think it probably needs a couple more degrees, but its so much better it gets the thumbs up from me.

Glad to hear you are making progress with your cooling issues, Geoff.
