I think HSS have engine cranes for hire if you can't find one elsewhere.

Don't need to spend lots, a 15 quid strap winch and some wood is enough to drop and lift an engine

Thanks itchy. I’m afraid I can’t find the bit where you mention the winch. It’s a long thread . Excellent suggestion. I’ve been thinking same but can’t quite see it in practice without seeing or reading more. Cheers Tim

I can vouch for Itchyfeet's method - works well. http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.p ... 5#p8195113" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I see what you mean! Is that 2x3 Wood, seems a bit thin for weight of agg but get the idea and as you say it works! Does the ratchet have gears or just keeptension whilst using a triollry jack underneath at the same time ? Thanks

I used CLS - 38mm x 63mm - screwed together through some ply packers so that there was enough of a gap to drop the hook through. The timber was far stronger than it needed to be for a WBX. The winch is geared, so it's an easy one-man job to drop or lift the engine, and it has a ratchet to prevent it dropping.

That looks exciting. does it have the ability to drop or raise just a little when fitting the input shaft spigot, I imagine it being hard to control, no?

I think this was my idea origionally ( I never saw it anywhere before), can't say about the cable winch, my concern would be if the wire does not stack perfectly so it could be less controllable but the strap winch works very well, its very controllable within mm and you can slide the engine on and off the gearbox input shaft by sliding the wood, angle of engine is achieved by the chain.

trust me the wood is more than strong enough for the heaviest engine.

where there is carpet add a board to help the wood slide easily...

Having used this method on a gti engine I can vouch for its simplicity and sense! Well done itchy.
