hello all , i have just replaced my starter motor on my 82 T25 after it was getting really noisy and finally gave up , so i replaced it with the same model , but it makes a crunching noise as it engages , its a diesel starter running a golf 2L GTI engine on a diesel bell housing ,its been fine since Brickwerks installed it quite a few years ago , i have checked the starter out of the bell housing and it is nice and quite , any ideas ?

Perhaps replace the bush in the bellhousing...otherwise hard to know unless the flywheel worn but seems unlikely unless damaged.

No bush - it is diesel set up.
