Screeching water pump

Post by dogbreath100 »

My van 1.9 straight diesel 1 Y has developed a screeching noise from starting .
It usually lasts 45 to 60 seconds and then all is good .
Van doesn't overheat and needle never moves
I'm thinking the pump is on the way out and was
wondering is it easy to replace .
Is it just a case of bolt off and bolt on or should I
bring it to a garage , thanks .

Usually if a water pump is making that sort of noise you would see signs of water seepage indicating bearings are shot - more likely to be loose belt which usually manifests as a screech at start up. ( Usually due to higher load on the alternator as it replaces the starting juice)

Thank you for the reply ,
I recently replaced the belt but that didn't solve anything .
I will check tomorrow on the tightness of it .
To come to think of it I had to put water into the tank behind the flap .
Again , will check this also tomorrow, thanks again .

This actually turned out to be the alternator .
Brought the alternator to the local auto electrian and he
suggested to change the bearings which he did but then
noticed that the pulley was worn which he changed .
So no more screeching :ok

I bet that if you had put a 10mm wide belt on instead of a 9.5mm one that would have solved it also! Was the old belt running in the bottom of the groove then?

It was the auto electrican that spotted the worn pulley
After he had changed the bearings . He did say that the old bearings were not bad so
he started looking elsewhere .
I'm just happy that there's no more screeching at 6.30 am , neighbors will be happy also .
