Td fuel pump timing, turbo re indexing and other things

Post by z3i »

Hello guys I (unfortunately) have more questions about my TD engine :S I am sorry

I cant upload pictures as the resolution is too big even though I took them on my phone :(

Firstly my engine is coming along nicely and i have nearly finished building it. I have found how to time the diesel pump, but you need the special tool to adapt a dti gauge? i have a dti gauge but do I definitely need the adapter? Its rather annoying as its £100 from Brickwerks and ill use it once :( I also read somwhere about advancing the pump a little further than the original spec? but i cannot for the life of me find where i read this again. Anyone got any ideas or figures of how much more?

My engine is a 1V from a jetta which is almost identical to the SB and RA engines. The turbo that came with it is strange, at first i thought it was a K14 but now im not so sure, its water cooled but the turbo outlet doesnt face upwards. its got no numbers stamped on it as i had it rebuild and they have removed the plate. I have been told to re index it but i can because the two housings are attached via the wastegate

The engine was originally intercooled, obviously this will be tricky on the T3, I was thinking of charge cooling it, is that a bit over kill? Im hoping for 90 reliable HP. Does anyone have any good setups for charge cooling on a TD engine? or should I not bother?

As far as oil cooling goes, I have the original water to oil cooler plumbed in. Will this be sufficient in keeping the Oil temps down? do people fit uprated radiators or bigger fans? ive read these engines like to run really hot?

The water cooling pipes from the turbo, where exactly do they plumb into? Ive had a look on VAGcat and cant see where they go? i imagine the return goes to the expansion tank? and the inlet comes from a t piece near the water pump maybe? wheres best to plumb it in? and what to use?

Really appreciate any help :D

Sorry they aren't direct pictures, this was the best I could do :(

I'm still not sure of which holes on the turbo are the water feeds and oil feeds, if someone could tell me that would be awesome. Don't want to get them wrong haha
