Glow plug light duration

Post by jaber »

Hi my glow plug light stays on a fair while at least 45 secs is this normal it starts no probs it's a 1.9sdi unit from a golf I am getting about 10.9 volts at the plugs can this be right? When ignition is switched on which drops to nowt when light goes out, I understand that there are 2 types of glow plug fast and slow slow being up to 90 secs which seems exedingly long what does every one else's do?

In general there are 3 types of relays used in VWs.
The oldest ones are the long pre glow ones with no or minor post glow time. These were used in early 80s diesels. I remember as these had 45s pre glow time.
There are ones with shorter pre glow and longer post glow time adjusted by the coolant temp. these were used in the 80s. These had max 15s pre glow and up to 45s post glow.
Later in the early 90s there was a thirtd style which is similar to the second ones but with post glow time up to 180s for reduce cold start emissions.
