Best recon engine supplier?

Post by Bucky P »

I've got a 1.6TD JX engine that I want to replace with a 1.9TD or similar. Where is the best place to get a recon engine from?

The *best* recon VW engine supplier is without a doubt, VW. However I've not checked if they are still listing the 1.9 long block.

Regarding 3rd party suppliers in the UK, the only one I've knowledge of is AW in Darwen. They seem to shift quite a few engines, and are probably capable of doing good work. However they do use chinese-made components such as lifters, probably camshafts etc etc.

Hi, I've just had my engine (1.9DG) replaced at the vw engine company

Great guys, really knowledgable in all things vw engine matters. I had the turn key option and they turned it around in 1 week!

Well worth speaking to them.

All in £3.3k. This included them doing it, I just rocked up with knackered engine and week later drove away with new engine, new clutch , new water pump flywheel, stainless steel pipes from engine to rad, 4 new engine mounts all labour AND 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.
Starts first time every time even when it's stood a few days and -3 Celsius in the morning.

Looked at Subaru engine conversion, but it started at £5k+ just to have a donor engine that only has top end looked at. Plus mine would need new fuel tank as the outlet isn't big enough for fuel injection.

The vw engine guys really know their stuff. I now have no fears about driving anywhere, it's like a brand new engine, without being called a new engine as they even break the case and re-grind the crankshaft. OK there are some guys that can do this themselves I'm sure, but within a week? Whilst working? I'd put it down as a winter project to do it myself, although I would need some specialist tooling and would I have 2 year warranty? Now I don't need to, but it did cost me.......

Nightmare company, don't know whether deliberate or through incompetence. I have put full details ( a few times, subsequently pruned) on the terminal breakdowns with 5 different Elite Engines a couple less than 2 miles from their yard after picking up the van. You might get lucky or you might get months of BS and breakdowns. Engines easily recognised by peeling non heatproof vivid green or blue paint

Hmmmm elite............if you want to just waste your money I suggest putting all your cash on the bbq and watch it burn, it will last longer than one of their "recon" engines!!

Still getting nowhere with this! The VW Engine Company don't do diesels but they put me in touch with a company that do but it looks like all they can offer is a recon 1.6JX engine. I want to put a more powerful engine in to replace the JX but it seems there are so many options it's a complete minefield!
Ideally I want to find a company that can take out the old JX and put in a 1.9TD or similar.

If you canvas opinion on here I'm not sure you'll get uniformly positive feedback on MV.

Seen these chaps advertise regularly on eBay, but don't know anyone who has used them though:

Might be worth a call.
