2.1 vs EJ?

Post by Mickandsej »

Sorry chaps this must be a time worn question, I've already mentioned on here I have been offered a 2.0EJ from a buggy so pre-fitted to a dub and just need the exhaust, manifolds etc (he's going 2.5 so not everything available).
I also mentioned and have disregarded a possible 20v NA engine.
However this week I bought an eBay item from a local Dubber who has offered his thoughts on Scooby and has made me rethink, and a local Dub Shop has also previously suggested going to 2.1 with carbs.
My DG is in regular use so not really viable to slowly recon as is, it's a good engine but showing signs of age (more regular oil top ups).
Today I've had my share issue mature (first group shares on SAYE and decided not to.....) so I have a couple of quid to do something sharpish.
Would anyone have a 2.1 to throw into the ring?

2.1 vs EJ?

Post by DoubleOSeven »

Hello again Mick. Yes, 2.1 is the way to go, lots of threads on here of folk doing or done this. You can change the piston rings, water gasket o-rings, move the heads, Pierburg etc across without too much effort. So, keep um peeled for a 2.1 MV or DJ off an ideally later van with lower miles and away you go. It'll probably outlast your needs; 10 yrs. Building a 2.1 bottom end up, a harder task and maybe not for all.

I've seen people go Suburu EJ and are now coming back to WBX, but that's their story to tell...

You could always rebuild The ej20 into a 2.1 ,, I put a ej20 turbo into mine as i find them so easy to work on and have found them to be reliable but being a Scooby specialist I'm a bit bias lol. ,,,doing the swap was very very easy thanks to Richard @ rjes as it was all just plug and play

Yep I wouldn't ever go back to my wbx after the ej20 fitted in the summer. So much more kick, very simple and clean engine bay, super smooth and sounds amazing roaring along at some nice high revs when it really takes off

But whatever gets you on the road ay, it's all good!

'Tis Me! (see above) ^^ No offence but for a first engine swap, 2.1 maybe the easier way to go.

^^ What he said ;-)

TBH when I bought my van after a couple of years with a T4 Holdsworth I wanted to go the full euro look with it, but it dawned on me a Holdsworth roof sort of ages the van too much so I went down the retro style (swapped out big bumpers, square lights et al). Therefore a wbx seems sensible in the scheme of things, and it's not like I'm unhappy with the DG, in fact far from it. I actually enjoyed doing a tour this year up to the lakes at 50 mph, so speed certainly not a factor. (My daily drive is a 125mph HST.....)

I could build you one, either fully reconditioned or good unit rebuilt/repaired, or if you wanted to do it yourself I can put together a kit - I have new and used cranks, DJ and MV pistons, new rings, and can supply new camshaft. (Almost) everything else is DG!

Thanks for that, worth considering! Martin had mentioned some sort of assembly like this, tbh not over sure of my mechanical ability to do so much myself..
Aside from this there's also the possibility my good lady will permit me to do some landscaping out back and if so, I could set aside the space to do it at a leisurely pace, I liked the suggestion of putting the engine inside the van to work on it!
I only have a lock up garage and there's a 1949 MG YT in there which needs a little fettling as I have promised it for our friend's wedding in August...
