Help ID'ing diesel engine

That's where - fine emery cloth needed when it is that bad. Carefully and you should be able to pick it out.

I'd currently rate the chances of anything being read off there ever again as slim to none but I'll see what some patient rubbing yields when it's less wet and windy outside.

I know it's got 100K+ on it but if I'm getting good MPG / 70mph / no oil leaks / no smoke should I be concerned about its, shall we say "less than stellar" appearance?

My boat engine looked far worse than that when I changed it last year - at least with all that rust you know that it has never suffered from oil leaks. The only rust that I would be concerned about is the injector pipes, you don't want to have them failing. It isn't as though the engine is on show. :D

I think a wire brush, steel wool and as Oldie said some emery cloth would relieve those numbers
