How big is your garage?

Postby Jim San » 17 Sep 2019, 13:16

Would you mind helping me by answering a few questions about domestic spaces.
It is in aid of research for my major degree project. I am investigating the reduction in size of housing, gardens and garages. UK Homes built today are (on avg) as small as they were in the 40’s but I want to determine what, if anything has changed with our garages and gardens – to me these are both valuable creative spaces which seem to be shrinking. According to a study by Sainsbury’s car insurance only 22% of garages are used for cars and more than half are converted to other purposes.
The more results the better for building a more complete picture so please share with friends and family if you wish.
Please PM me this info if you do not want it public.

1) When was your house built (decade)?
2) How many bedrooms does it have?
3) Was it built with a garage?
3a) how big is the garage?
3b) What do you use the garage for?
3c) is it big enough to accommodate your car?
3d) what car do you have (model and year)
4) How big is your garden - approx?
5) Have you created additional enclosed space in the garden (Shed, garage, summer house etc)
5a) Was this out of choice or necessity?
5b) What is the additional space used for?
5c) What determined the size?

Many thanks

This thread is strangely fascinating, not sure why...

I wonder, how many of us experience what is now known as a 'single story lifestyle' previously known as 'living in a bungalow'?

Surely the bungalow must be the most space hungry form of domestic dwelling...where else can the kids say that they can run round the house?

Many thanks for replies so far. I had been expecting many owners on this forum having their garages as workshops - I had half expected the reason to be because the garage isn't big enough for a modern car (like mine) hence asking model and year of car.
I was also hoping to find some correlation between the age of house and size of garden - hence asking decade built and size of garden.
The number of bedrooms is also a factor, few and far between are there 2 bed houses built with a garage.

keep it coming, fascinating

NB Actual measurements are particularly helpful, more so than describing a garage as single or double (particularly the width). Mine is 2.4m wide - We could fit our BWM Mini in there and my old Nova but bigger than this and getting out is practically impossible (modern cars have grown wider and doors bigger/longer)

Not that anecdotal evidence is very helpful, but in the road where my in-laws live most of the houses were built in the 1930's and a lot had garages added in the 50's and 60's. None of them can fit a modern car in.

My Spitfire fits in mine so does our 1999 Polo and our 1997 Fiesta did but no way would the 2005 Focus estate. Although I do have a workbench across the back taking up space.
