MOT fail

Postby crazyhorse » 17 Sep 2018, 12:21

Well today was the day... took the old boy in.. comes back with some bad news

The list is longer than war an peace

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive
Brakes imbalanced across rear axle
Integral body structure corroded to the extent of the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced offside front
exhaust has a major leak of gases (its a stainless one)
Suspension component mounting prescribed corroded
Suspension arm ball joint worn (nearside front upper)
Wheel bearing has excessive play (NF)
Wheel bearing has excessive play (NR)

Got them to price it up for me. Some jobs I can have a crack at but others....

What you reckon £500

Where did you take it? Some of these faults would be picked up at every MOT station, but some things could be symptoms common to T25s. There is usually some small play in wheel bearings, for example. If you get that lot done for £500, you'll be doing well....

CP Motors in Llantwit.

General garage. Never done a MOT with them before. Usually Steve a Gasure would sort me out with the MOT. :(

Will wait to see the price then get back up there and get them to show me the welding it needs etc

I can change balljoint, and adjust bearings. Not sure about rear breaks. Others I am worried about

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive - tweak of the carb, easy
Brakes imbalanced across rear axle - manual adjustment of adjuster, easy
Integral body structure corroded to the extent of the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced offside front - You'll need to tell us much more, is it just the step ?
exhaust has a major leak of gases (its a stainless one) - really, where from exactly
Suspension component mounting prescribed corroded - again more info needed, what, where, photos
Suspension arm ball joint worn (nearside front upper) - easy replace
Wheel bearing has excessive play (NF) - Probably just needs tweaking, easy
Wheel bearing has excessive play (NR) - Probably doesn't know the design and appreciate a bit of play is quite normal

As always the corrosion will be the difficult bit to judge

I always have the post fail shock before I think it through rationally.
I should really inspect before the test but I have found its better, for me anyway, just to stick it in and get the list.
If you do the jobs sharp its a free retest.

Just got the call from the Garage.

7 hours labour £480 including MOT.

Might do a the ball joint and bearings myself to get the price down a bit. Going up in the morning to see what needs welding and the damage to the exhaust

In what way . Van has to be tested as presented, different test levels if presented on LPG ?

CO limit is same for both fuels - up to Aug '86 4.5%, after '86 3.5%.
It's the HC that needs to be calculated differently, and he didn't fail on that.

how was the mot test station with you removing the van following the fail? there are horror stories all over the news at current or is it just the press at its best.

They were ok. They do hold you to ransom a bit. They gave me a choice to to take it somewhere else or keep it there. Still not convinced the rear hub meeds doing

Cant do the repairs till week next Monday. It falls outside of the 10 working days but im not paying again as its there fault I have to wait so long. In the meantime, will get Charlie at prospeed exhausts in Cardiff to fix my stainless Exhaust.
