Help....Dash Cam footage.

Postby kentishvanman » 29 Aug 2018, 20:18

Hi,
Can anyone help please.
Wish to send dash cam footage via email. About 220mb. Gmail has limit of 20mb, so it tells me.
Have discovered that I need to put footage on a file host. Started on Google Drive but I think I will 'pass over before it finishes. 30mins and only about 80mb transfered.....Is that right?
All help welcomed.
Thanks

The upload speed of most broadband is pretty slow even if you have fast download speeds.

Try using https://wetransfer.com (you can send up to 2,000mb in one go).

As above. You just have to be patient on uploads.

OK. Thanks.
I suppose they are all as slow as one another?

If you've got a big enough data allowance, and a good 4G signal, 4G upload speeds can easily exceed those of typical copper-based broadband services. Fibre internet is faster than copper, but I believe that fibre-based services are still 'asymmetric', meaning uploads are slower than downloads (I have copper, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong). 4G services seem to be able to upload at the same speed as downloads, and where I am the 4G speeds are much faster than my ~15Mbps broadband.

I just checked. It looks like my broadband has improved behind my back :D . I'm now getting ~19Mbps download, but still only 0.85Mbps upload. That asymmetry is the 'A' in 'ADSL'.

My 4G speeds are ~45Mbps download and ~7.5Mbps upload, so not symmetric as I thought, but nearly 9 times faster upload speed than my broadband.

Your 80MB in 30 minutes corresponds to an average upload speed of (80*8)/(30*60) = ~0.35Mbps, which is not unusual for a sustained upload speed on a line shared with other homes.

At 7.5Mbps upload speed, your 220MB file would take a few minutes to upload, but it would use 220MB+ of your data allowance.

Most dashcams record in QuickTime,I usually use a video editing software to merge all the required segments then covert to mp4.makes a much smaller file.
