Anyone got pressed number plates?

Postby chewbacca » 11 Sep 2019, 11:41

https://www.ukmetalplates.com/?gclid=Cj ... ber-plates

I've been fancying a set on the bus for ages, I think they suit the older VWs.
The question of legality always comes up, but these sound ok. (Thought you had to take documents or something now, but what do I know.)

Anyone got any experience of them, especially from these guys?

what a waste of time for all us law abiding citizens, like that ever stopped a criminal getting hold of number plates.

We got our pressed plates from ebay and had to provide a copy of the V5 and ID.

Pressed plates are only legal on pre 1972, but the 40 year exception rule does apply, so you’ll have to wait a few more years, assuming you don’t own a ‘79 of course!

Show plates only then for T3’s at the moment.

I’m not sure that pressed plates are only legal for pre72 , black and silver plates yes, but BS AU 145d reflective pressed plates should be ok,

Update. Rules only apply to car registered from 2001 onwards it seems. Personally I’m not a fan, but it’s your van.

So it sounds as though they're legal(ish).
Just need to pick ebay or those guys at the top I guess.

Cheers all.

As long as they're 'reflective' they're legal, that's the point.

I have 'em on mine, passes MOT with them every year.

I've a set on mine, legal font, correct spacing, correct colours and marked up as BS AU 145d standard compliant.

Not had any issues regarding plod or MOT.

As already said as all our vans will be pre 21/03/2001 they should be perfectly legal.

It appears after this there is some conflict with some suppliers saying yes and other sources say no.

2 points of conflict appear to be:
- Material must be reflective material, not made so by a treatment.
- Mine a reflective as are a lot of metal ones, this would appear to be done with the paint treatment.

- Ive also read that tucked away in new regulations is that the plates should have some degree of flexibility, ie if subject to certain force will flex and return back to shape.
- Not sur eon this one as I've not seen any specific details.

The applicable regulations are in DVLA Leaflet INF104.

I'm happy to be corrected, but my understanding from INF104 is that the age of the vehicle has no bearing on the type of numberplate you can fit, unless the vehicle is registered as a historic vehicle, in which case the vehicle can display 'traditional plates'.

If the vehicle is not historic, then any new or replacement number plates fitted to it after 01/09/01 need to be formatted to meet the requirements of INF104. There are slightly different dimensional requirements for number plates fitted before 01/09/01, but otherwise the rules are similar.
