Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

I think continuous spray is wrong. I recorded a video in slow mo and could see it pulsing. It runs batched injection. If it sprays continuously then I would say that's a sign of the Digijet ECU being fried. The same used to happen on Digifant golf GTIs and it fills up the cylinders until they lock s...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Running sweet now, turns out it was the tappet adjustment. After I refitted the heads, the process of turning the ending over by hand to set each cylinder to TDC caused the tappets to collapse. I tried my best to set the rockers but the slack in the tappets caused ALL of the adjustment screws to wor...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Test with another ECU. Possibly, but it's running now. I'll see how it goes. Whatever was causing it to not start has to be attributed to the work I did. Everything was working fine before I stripped it. It's not impossible but would have been bad luck if an electronic module failed in the time it ...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

This rings a bell. Engine that cranks with no fuel pump, but when not cranking the fuel pump works. I can't remember the cause though. Faulty fuel pump relay? No, the fuel pump was running when cranking etc, it just felt like it was flooding. What I did was use Easystart and then plugged the connec...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Yeah I was concerned about weak spark as well, hence changing the plugs (as you know, v difficult to clean off they're fouled). I did actually buy a new Lucas ignition amp but when it arrived I suspected to be counterfeit Chinese part. Tried it quickly, no difference so I'll return it. Oh and yes th...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Ok, back on it now. Replaced spark plugs. Put 20l of E10 fuel in. Adjusted the position of the chassis connections on the LH cylinder head. Nothing... Isolated one injector and spark plug. Set up my camera to film in slow mo. I could see the injector pulsing 4 times per cycle which surprised me as I...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Pump definitely running! It primes on the ignition. Injectors pulsing as above.

The fuel level is low and it's old. Next step is to top up with a Jerry can but I won't get a chance until we're back from holiday now :?

Re: Which oil - T25 1.9 litre watercooled engine

Tappets are supposed to feel solid. If they are spongey then they have lost pressure and as the rocker presses on them you won't get full lift. If you run the engine and then check and they are still spongey then I think you will need to check/replace them. To complicate matters, tappets can also se...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Starts if I disconnect the intake trunk and spray easy start past the throttle, but then cuts out (maybe because the MAF is bypassed?)

Something weird with the fuel...?

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

If the dizzy wasn't disturbed, how could the timing be out? Sent from my moto g(30) using Tapatalk Because of this bit written by OP. I Order - Set cyl 1 to TDC with the rotor arm pointing at the corresponding HT lead. If I turn the engine by hand I can see the exhaust valve starts compressing so I...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Sounds like there must be a lot of fuel in/gone down the bores. This can result in a mixture so rich that it won't ignite, even after cleaning the plugs. If you've turned it over long enough to flatten the battery several times, you may well have excess fuel contaminating the oil (possibly mixing w...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

modern fuel goes off quickly, but one would still expect it to try and run, unless there's a lot of water and little fuel, water settles in bottom of tank Have you tried disconencting and reconnecting the ECU to 'clean' the contacts Is the air flow meter connected ? Easy to omit to plug that in :oo...

Re: 2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Thanks for replying! I'm 99% sure but will try swapping the HT leads. I haven't adjusted the dizzy. Also the HT leads are as connected before (I took a photo) and match the correct order in the book. The ground wires I'll recheck, it's a good point. I connected them slightly differently because I ha...

2.1 DJ won't fire up after head rebuilds

Hello, really hope someone can offer some guidance here. 1992 2.1 DJ automatic *Full history here in case anything is relevant* Buddy has been a really good runner for us since we bought around 5 years ago. I maintain it myself. Regular oil changes and anything else that's needed. Fuel injectors wer...
