Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)
Thanks Paul. I should be able to get hands on a good set of micrometers no problem.

Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)
Thanks Carrera. Great spot. I'll take a closer look at that cylinder, head and seals see if I can see wear. I'm a mech eng and have done bore and cylinder measurements in non-auto applications before so I'll see if I can locate or buy a set of 75-100mm micrometers. Can cheap eBay mics be trusted for...

Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)
Thanks carrera. I might order some JB Weld. Now you mention it, the head on cylinder No. 2 cleaned up straight away with a rag. Just an oily residue but no built up Carbon. I wonder was it steam cleaned and was that where the white smoke was coming from? I don't have micrometers to measure the pisto...

Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)
Thanks for the advice 123. I have cleaned up the heads a bit and the barrels and it looks as if I will get away with the pits as they don't extend down as far as the o-ring groove. They are only about 1.3mm deep so I'm hoping they can be filled with liquid metal. Can you recommend a liquid metal bra...

Rebuild Thread (Probably)
So I've had some problems with white smoke on start-up and poor compression on my 1983 1.9 DG. I decided to drop out the engine using itchyfeet's winch method and I followed MartinR's removal instructions and the Haynes manual. Some photos are here . My plan is to replace all seals and piston rings ...

Re: White Smoke...
A bit of an update: I got my compression test kit yesterday and got to work today. All seems relatively OK. Getting 8.5 to 9 bar (125 to 135 psi) on all 4 pistons versus a wear limit of 8 bar for a DG engine according to the Haynes manual. I was expecting much worse. Would these kinds of compression...

Re: White Smoke...
Nice easy way to have a nosey at other engine bays. Your carb top doesn't look like a DG one either, normally three nuts http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=165808 I see what you mean. This one from nesty on that thread looks a bit like mine so it may be original... http://i67.tiny...

Re: White Smoke...
Thanks Carrera. Have to step away now but will look into a compression tester next week to get a baseline. Do IO need a tachometer to map the pressures at various revs or is it adequate to just get an idea on idle? When you do the rebuild I suggest you go back to standard intake & breather arran...

Re: White Smoke...
Thanks carrera. I've read up on and submitted a form to join the club. :ok I tried the 15-20 mins on idle as you suggested. White smoke again on start-up so the loose spark plug fix was a false dawn. :( Seems to be intermittent. It cleared quite quickly and was clear also when I restarted after the ...

Re: White Smoke...
FURTHER UPDATE: I took the van for a good spin with the missus driving this evening. No white smoke when we started or when running but got a bit of a cloud when when we stopped for 10 mins and restarted. We did about 10 miles including about 300m of climbing as a test and had the engine cover off t...

Re: White Smoke...
I got this from the Wiki: head gaskets on the WBX are not like inline engines, the oil and water rarely mix when they do go, most references to head gaskets "going" on these are really water jacket seals going, wh...

Re: White Smoke...
The mayo in the top could have built up over time. Now you know it is clean you can keep an eye on it. Short journeys are usually the cause. That's what I'm hoping. Cap is clean now so will keep a close eye on it. The loose spark plug & an subsequent absence of smoke makes no sense to me ...

Re: White Smoke...
To answer your question Itchyfeet, it just did it on starting cold. UPDATE: I followed 937carrera's advice and lo and behold, I found a loose spark. It was really just sitting in there and barely hand tight. I took out all the spark plugs and cranked her over. Thankfully there was no sign of water c...

White Smoke...
Hi all. A T25 and forum newbie here so bear with me. I have had a 1983 High Top with a 1.9 Petrol DG engine for the past 2 months. I have replaced a couple of perished coolant hoses, a thermostat and oil filter but other than a couple of burst hoses and air locks (lots of bleeding) it's been running...
