Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

Timing set by timing light, adjusted by hand back, forwards, same thing. Vac pipes on or off no difference as vac advance not working (new unit is in post) but I've been told and read that the vac advance doesn't make a big difference and many vans run without it jst relying on the centrifugal advan...

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

LT lead 1k ohm HT leads all 5k ohm. Replaced the rotor arm recently and have swapped back, no difference so not that.

I just don't get it. Tickover is sweet as a nut, the engine has never sounded so good, put your foot down and phut phut phut shudder, phut phut..

Re: Popping through carb, vibration, loss of power 1.9 DG

Apologies for the double post - I've just had both rockers off again and rebuilt very carefully to ensure push rods are seated in the followers properly. minute adjustments only required if anything to the adjusters as you would expect. Another compression test - all 150 psi or so. Spark plugs in, s...

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

Reset the preload? The only adjustment is the adjusters on the rockers no?

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

I did consider a pushrod not seated properly but I've reassembled them very slowly paying close attention to them being seated after every turn of the rocker mounting bolts by pushing them with a screwdriver. All adjusters seem aligned closely to each other. Why don't they make the shoulder part of ...

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

I didn't actually get all the lifters out just 4 of them. There's now no tappet noise at all, just the phut phut phut from the carb, zero power, vibration (see my post above). Timing is spot on although vac advance not working I'm pretty sure it never has. I've read other posts where people say they...

Re: Popping through carb, vibration, loss of power 1.9 DG

What's doing my head in with this issue is that nothing seems to make any difference at all. Whatever I adjust timing, valves, carbs, always the same. Grrr...

Re: Popping through carb, vibration, loss of power 1.9 DG

Thanks for the input. I thought we were definitely on the right track with valves but now I'm baffled. I've adjusted and adjusted these things, they are now super loose, like 1 mm, no preload at all. I adjusted them yesterday and then again this morning. Run engine, plugs out, compression check - al...

Re: Automatic T25s - Tell me about them please!

I have a 1.9 DG automatic and really like it. The van has paperwork for a recondition 10k miles ago so that was peace of mind for sure. It's really relaxing to drive and returns low 20s MPG wise. It has been said, if they are maintained I would go for it just be sure it doesn't need major work as th...

Popping through carb, vibration, loss of power 1.9 DG

Hi all. After replacing 4 of the lifters in the van they now seem to have quietened down but - another issue. The engine starts well but coughs/pops every 2 seconds or so. Sometimes the noise goes away for 20 seconds then returns. With every cough/pop the engine hesitates. I've tried adjusting the t...

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

OK, engine running now and lifters seem fine, thanks for the replies. Another problem now though! Popping through carb, hesitation, vibration, 50 loss of power. WIll upload video to YouTube on another post..

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

Hmm.. 4 lifters replaced and it's clattering like mad, no better at all. I think it's time to get a second opinion on what the noise is and then consider the Subaru engine transplant that I was probably going to consider one day anyway. Anyone near or in Brighton that might be free to have a listen?...

Re: Hydraulic lifters not coming out

Yes, have gone for the Scat tubes from VWH. The lifters were from Just Kampers so are Elring. No idea if good or not? Assumed so as they seem to be a reputable supplier. Am pretty sure these last 4 lifters are going nowhere so as you suggest, I'll be replacing the 4 that I did get out, re-assembling...
