Though ‘hitting it with a hammer’ would have been a bit easier. I shall reflect on all this and decide whether it’s worth trying to sort or whether I just live with a wobbly and mostly-unadjustable backrest.

Update#2: 8mm Allen key has removed the only obviously removable aspect of the side plate. Also, as one side’s bolt was loose, before I did this I tightened up both sides first in case this fixed the wobble problem - it didn’t. Hmm that’s good to know, thanks David. Well, it speaks to a long standing issue, but is helpful for me to know anyway. I’ll update once I’ve got a proper set of alan keys!

A possible culprit for the annoying fore -aft backrest travel could be the bolt that I can see as per pic - there’s a silver bolt on both sides of the seat, and I can see that they are lose and slide up and down when the backrest slips.
