Re: Conrods weight difference

That's very good news but I'm afraid I don't fully understand how this works. Could you please explain why compression will negate the weight difference?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Conrods weight difference

Fortunately my new pistons are all within 1g of each other. Unfortunately this means I can't use the piston weight to balance the conrod difference.

Will do more measurements and experiments this week-end. I'll let you know how difficult it is to get a conrod properly balanced.

Re: Conrods weight difference

Very interesting topic on TheSamba, thanks for pointing it out. But I'm even more confused now because I don't know what information should I take from there. I saw they talk about 0.1g which is what I would expect from an engine running constantly at high rpm. But for these engines you have a ton o...

Re: Conrods weight difference

That is interesting. The current set I have is: 684g, 689g, 691g and 694g. I have two more sets I can't use because each one has one conrod either bent or cracked. One set is around 700g, all are between +/- 3g. The other set is in the 680g range, all +/-5g. I keep finding mixed information, none fr...

Conrods weight difference

Hi, I'm rebuilding from scratch a 1.7d KY engine and just received a NOS set of conrods. I was surprised to find a weight difference of 10g between the lightest and heaviest conrods. I wasn't expecting racing grade balancing (0.1 to 0.5g diff) but from my experience with VW 1300 and 1600 engines the...

Re: Onboard computer for VW T3 and earlier

I've been away for a few days, but I'm back working on this. I don't think I'll be using an LCD. Most probably I'll have the data written to an SD card (will double as a data logger) and send it over Bluetooth to my phone. The water temperature is done. After 3 nights I have managed to properly cali...

Re: Onboard computer for VW T3 and earlier

Hi Martin, If you have no oil pressure info (except the red blinking light that says it's to late), yes, for sure there is only a switch somewhere in there. VDO has a 0-5bar sender (https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/vdo-sender-oil-pressure-5bar-0-25bar-m10x1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href...

Re: Onboard computer for VW T3 and earlier

Hi Martin, Any analog sender will do the same, the resistor inside will go up or down. Theoretically you need to measure the voltage from a voltage divider with the pressure sender acting as one of the resistors. Rounding and error corrections are needed, but it is the same process as measuring temp...

Onboard computer for VW T3 and earlier

Hi guys, I was curious if anybody knows any successful projects to get an onboard computer for VW T3. Is anyone interested in such a thing? I've recently started working on one powered by an Arduino. The first phase is to read, display and record coolant temperature, oil temperature and oil pressure...

Thanks a lot, it's clear now.

I have to start researching the crankshaft, or how to get it into the best possible shape :)

KY engine bore size

Hi, Does anyone know the actual piston/bore size for the 1.7D KY engine? I'm looking for the correct match for the second repair oversize. That is 1mm oversize, I believe. I want to order the pistons from tornau-motoren.de and they say the size is 80.51mm. Is this the actual piston size, or the size...

Re: Engine rebuild saga

I need to keep the 1.7D block due to legal constraints. I can put on the car only engines that originally came from the manufacturer. It's easy to swap a 1.7D with another 1.7D, just need to change the serial number on the papers. Putting a 1.6D or TD is a little more difficult but still possible. C...

Engine rebuild saga

Hi guys, I was speeding on the highway at an amazing 80km/h when a strange and loud sound came from the rear of the car. A smoke cloud followed. By the time I managed to get on the emergency lane the engine was stuck. Long story short, a valve snapped, rotated and the piston nailed it through the cy...

Re: Looking for seat advice.

I'm in your spot right now. Looking for an upgrade. I've researched the T25 Caravelle seats, the most luxurious ones I believe with armrests and all. But the price is ridiculous and unless you want to keep it original, go for the T4 seats. More comfort, way more cheap and available, easy to fit. Hav...
