Re: Gearbox code/suitable replacement gearbox
Thanks Aidan, I'm hoping to get it sorted in the winter and probably take the box out myself, but at least I have a couple of builders to choose from now thanks.

Smokey JX but only up hill
I was wondering if anyone had any pointers as to why my 1.6td is smokey but seems to be only up hills, the recon engine has done 60k and had a fresh turbo at the same time. The engine starts easily and sounds great for a diesel with no smoke at start up and pulls well enough, oil is 10/40 semi synth...

Gearbox oil is GL4 really necessary
All the manuals and specs call for GL4 gearbox oil but I have read that GL5 is now safe to use in our gearboxes as it has been upgraded, GL5 is a better oil apparently, anyone got any views on the subject please.

Re: Slow Diesel Starting
I think I would make sure the glow plugs are doing what they are supposed to for as long as they are supposed to as a first step. simple test light should do it, my glow light stays on 30 seconds and engine fires immediately.

Re: Diesel starter motor help please
The problem was the short thick lead from the solenoid into the starter body, it had just rotted, the casing of the whole starter motor was heavily rusted no idea how it could get so rusty so high up on the engine.

The nuts were a problem as they were badly rusted but I managed to get some big mole grips on them and got them undone.

Re: Kangarooing in second
Thanks for that Colin, I Clutch down and let it slip a little till I pick up a bit of speed.
I thought it might be a soft gearbox mounting or something like that.
Cheers.
