2.1 DJ engine fast idle
I’d be grateful for any suggestions as to why my 1986 2.1 DJ engine has started idling at 1600-1800 RPM. The engine was replaced 5 years ago, has less than 5000 miles on it and runs perfectly otherwise. I’ve checked the following common problems: 1. Idle control valve - it vibrates OK and I’ve even ...

Re: Captains seat assembly diagrams?
I'm looking to use the kit from Newton Commercial. I've just fitted a set of their door cards and i'm pleased with the quality.

Captains seat assembly diagrams?
I'm looking to retrim my front seats which will mean taking them apart. I've trawled wiki, and various topics but can't find any diagrams or guides. Does anyone have a link to a detailed diagram or guide? My main concern is how to separate the back from the base, it seems to be spring-loaded as part...

Squeaky clutch pedal cure?
My clutch pedal squeaks badly, especially on longer journeys. Does anyone have any suggestions on an easy way to deliver some oil/WD40 to the pedal shaft? It's just too far up inside the dash to reach with an oil can or spray from below and I don't want to have to take the top of the dash apart so I...

Re: Magnetic drip strip
I recall seeing the cable tie solution but both this and the magnetic strip offend my OCDness, so I've been playing with a couple of other solutions. First I tried fitting a rubber seal around the vent grille (see photo) but even my latest version fails as compression of the seal around the bottom r...

Re: Wheel arch liners how have you fitted yours?
I got mine from Brickwerks but they're showing out of stock at the moment. They're pretty flimsy things and you should expect to do some fettling to get them fitted, properly but once they're done it's worth it.

Re: Wheel arch liners how have you fitted yours?
I used Halfords self-tappers as they have a hex heads which should make subsequent removal easier if necessary. I also fitted rubber seals to the outer edge (similar to a tailgate seal) to keep water out and I also added silent coat sound deadening to reduce road noise. Finally I made brackets for t...

Re: Offset of 'new' T25 alloys
I've just fitted 17" x J7s that bought from VW heritage (they're SSPs). The van came with 17 x 8Js with 225/45/17 94W tyres and 10mm spacers all round but one had a wobble another had a crack and they were all pretty badly chipped so I bit bullet and decided to replace them. I was also concerne...

Re: Cylinder head rfit fail
CJH, thanks for the reply. The engine is in situ so I guess you need to wiggle the push rods during reassembly to seat them properly. Previously I turned the engine over with a spanner and it seemed OK, perhaps I didn't do sufficient revolutions to check all the valves. The head is now off and I can...

Cylinder head refit fail
I've just refitted a cylinder head to fix a leaky water jacket, however on testing the engine I noted there was no compression on either of the cylinders of this head. Now when inspecting the head whilst off I noticed that there were cracks between both sets of inlet & outlet valves, but I've se...

Replacing cylinder head water jacket - some advice please
I've just removed the right-hand head off my 2.1 petrol engine in order to replace that pesky leaking water jacket seal. Whilst removing the head the cylinder liners started to move out a little until I prised them from the head. Two questions: 1. Do you think the bottom piston liner seals will stil...

Isn't the wiki brilliant!
I just wanted to say a big thanks to all who have contributed to the wiki section. I'm quite experienced with maintaining British classics but I'm still a bit of a newbie with the van, so the info on this site is invaluable. A few weeks ago I filled the van up in preparation for a few days in the la...

Re: Gas hob keeps blowing out
Thanks Guys - I checked it out and it looks like a dodgy connection of the FFD thermocouple at the control knob. A quick wiggle (of the connection) seems to have sorted the problem.

Gas hob keeps blowing out
To celebrate the first day of my Christmas holiday I took the van out for a run today and was looking forward to having a nice cup of tea whilst looking out at the Cheshire countryside, however a problem with my gas hob marred an otherwise excellent day (despite the rain!) I have a two burner gas ho...
