That lower solenoid adjust pump timing so should not really cause starting issues, is there plenty of resistance when rotating pump by hand, it should be just about possible to rotate by hand if it's any good

One note the ALH pump and 1z/AHU look very different with the main difference being the drive pulley flange and pulley itself, probably better option to have your original pump repaired/rebuilt

No 1.9s don't give any overheating trouble. It does not matter weather you go 1.6 or 1.9 so long as engine you choose is fully rebuilt IMHO, it's just the IDI takes a lot of money to build properly, at least £1200 in partss alone.
