I have that bar thru the base ok, it's the springs, one fitted on either side, that push that bar down into the notches in the seat rail that I'm having trouble with. Looks as though they may be missing on your seat too.

I'm open to correction on this but I don't believe the differences you see are to do with the pre/post '84 divide, I currently own both so I'm familiar with the changes.
