Myself and family have now immigrated back to SA.

The welded one is an earlier version. The loose ring one is a latter version. You need a gasket for the welded one on the box side and a sealing ring on
the other.
The threaded side of the box is for the tail pipe.

One way of fixing it is to weld a thick washer in place and use a slightly longer bolt. No thinner that 3mm. 4 to 5 will be better.

A syncro can legally tow 2.5t only with special certificate from VW. Not as standard as people are being informed by others.
This certificate will only be issued by VW once they have fitted the upgrade package to your vehicle.
No longer available and a substantial cost when it was.

Very much sounds like your pinion bearing is collapsing and your crown wheel and pinion is eating itself. Dont drive but sounds like terminal damage has already occurred.
And an AAZ is a TD not a TDI or mTDI.

The spindle on the bottom catch has a bit of movement in it. If i fit a carrier in the workshop i also fit a small door stop to take up this bit of movement. But that is definitely closer than it should be. There should be a gap of about 2cm there. Send that measurement so i can check and if there i...

Well if you had sent me a photo showing it that close i would have given you different advice.
Can you send me the measurement of the bottom bracket. Surface face to face not including the catch.
