Re: Fuel overflow or spill?
Hmm. It's actually very unlikely to be the problem. If you look at the pic, you will see a bypass/equaliser below the (admittedly quite badly) corroded collar. Fuel would drain away down this before reaching the damaged part. His problem is lower down, I would say - and will still be there after rep...

Re: Fuel overflow or spill?
It's very common to have leaks from the upper surface of the tank. It's moulded around the stuff that runs front to rear (gear selector mech, handbrake cables, water pipes to rad if water cooled), there's effectively a valley for water to collect in. The original tanks were very well made and protec...

Re: Leak-off pipes...
Thanks for that..I do have a bit of an allergy to Halfords though. Especially that part where you get to the checkout and they say And that'll be just £19.95 sir... when all you've bought is a pack of jubilee clips or whatever. Anyway. The van does start, bless her...so I'll get some pipe off eBay o...

Leak-off pipes...
Got problems starting my AAZ. A whiff of EazyStart gets her going, but whenever I leave it for more than a few hours I get the same thing. Always starts eventually, but eventually isn't good. The leak-off pipes are pretty perished, especially at no.1 cyl, so replacing these is a priority. The curren...

Re: Petrol / Diesel tank are they the same?
As far as I know there were only two variations of fuel tank: difference was in the diameter of the hole where filler neck entered tank

Re: Value of an engine?
Hm. Turns out it's a DG, not a DJ. I couldn't even see whether the lpg was connected or not...so anyway, the whole thing's not for me. If anyone on the forum is interested, I have the guy's number - he said he'd probably let the whole van go for around the £500 mark, which I actually think is a good...

Re: Value of an engine?
Going to have a proper look today if I can. Will report back. Though from what you say, the whole thing will probably be a lot more bother than it's worth.

Re: Value of an engine?
Yeah, thought it'd be a tricky one. It's actually registered as a 1.9, so the 2.1 must have been an upgrade. MOT expired in 2012, which means there are probably horrors aplenty lurking for anyone with restoration in mind. I think my heart rules with these situations, and I hate to see a T3 left to d...

Value of an engine?
On holiday in Wales just now, and the neighbours near the cottage we're staying in have an '84 T3 parked up in the alley behind the houses. Been there for what looks to be a good five years, with commensurate decrepitude setting in. I spoke to the young lady who owns it, and she tells me it's a 2.1 ...

Re: 1.6 jx turbo
...hang on, though. I've just re-read your original post - and I do wonder what 'gasket' you mean. There shouldn't be a gasket at all between the turbo and the manifold. Do you mean between the turbo and downpipe?

Re: 1.6 jx turbo
No, strictly speaking it wouldn't. But a manifold that's old and out of condition enough to have warped would point to a more general likelihood of problems further up and down the chain. Perished\holed turbo hoses, badly fitting or loose clips, turbo return and\or feed restricted by cooked oil\carb...

Re: 1.6 jx turbo
There should be no oil coming through on the 'hot', or exhaust, side of the turbo. Oil on the intake side is more common and, within reason, can be acceptable. The JX exhaust manifolds are known for their tendency to warp - there's a lot of heat going on with a small displacement turbocharged motor.

Gearbox code unreadable ...
Looking to buy a gearbox out of an '86 Caravelle 1.9DG, but the code can't be read. Is there a likely 'box it will be fitted with, or could it be anything from the range? I've got the list of codes for all the years of manufacture, and in theory it could be one of quite a few part numbers. It's a fi...

Re: Flipped gearbox question
Yeah, all other things being equal, a DK might be a good choice - but many boxes of that age would surely need a recon by now. Part of the reason for going the flipped route would be so I can install a more powerful motor at some point, and an OE part without substantial mods would defeat the object...

Flipped gearbox question
Like a lot of folk, I'm thinking of this. I've come across an Audi 'box, code LAU. Prefix of part number is 012. Would this be suitable?
