Can anyone tell me what the output is meant to be? mine is 13.4v at the battery, i've been told it should be around 14.4v.

You can get a length of 'awning rail' which is in effect half a figure of eight which you can screw/pop rivet to the side of your high top if you don't fancy the other type. I use this method for my roll out canopy.

How do Kev, i fitted my own electrics in a couple of hours (and that was with trying to follow the crappy Haynes manual wiring diagram) so i'm sure we could do it in less than that with my van to work off.
