They are on really tight, standing on the end of a long 3/4" drive breaker bar should do it.

Also try wd40 and heating it up with a blow torch.

I remember repeatedly sheering my 1/2" bar until I bit the bullet and bought a new 3/4 bar and socket.

 

Aidan, I was just reading about the gear ratios in the 3H, do you think that it is a less suitable for bigger tyres?

My van is 30cm to body work below the front bumper with 16s with a 60 radius tyre, most of the time its fine, great round corners etc. Things only get problematic when it's fully loaded with camping gear or the roads rough, which unfortunately is most of its yearly miles.
