Re: CU EFI
100-110hp would be fantastic! I am being drawn towards doing my own rebuild at the moment and would stick to solex. I have a good deal to learn before starting as I like the idea of going a bit warmer, but have absolutely no knowledge of how to achieve what I want. I replaced piston rings, valve gui...

Re: Would an engine conversion affect historical taxation
I have spent some time doing some adding up and I think that it is going to boil down to either a remanufactured engine from VW Heritage or VEGE from JK, or get myself a second hand engine and rebuild. Scooby is going to end up being upwards of 5k for a proper job. Hopefully can do some learning and...

Re: Would an engine conversion affect historical taxation
Reading that info, the addition of electric power steering to none power steering models would also affect the status. Wonder how many have thought of that?

Would an engine conversion affect historical taxation
Does anybody know if (for example) putting a Subaru engine in an air-cooled van would affect the way that it is treated when it comes up to 40 years old for historical taxation? Just going over the many different options for replacing/rebuilding the poor old tired CU and suddenly thought that the go...

Re: CU EFI
Thanks Kev
Yeh, early days yet and just a thought going around in my head. My other thought about it was the reliability of an EFI system over the carbs? Not sure whether there is any difference or not.
By the way, still got the steel wheels on the van that I had off you many moons ago!
Cheers,
Rich

CU EFI
The bottom end is starting to get more noisy, so my thoughts are heading towards a rebuild. Has anybody built a CU with EFI? The guy I used to set up my twin carbs builds Megasquirt EFI systems for a living and the idea of sticking this on instead of twin carbs is getting me tingly. I would not be a...

Re: Rolling road recommendation
Thanks lefty67, I didn't realise they had a rolling road, will have to pop in and see them. Only had air-cooled vw's for 25 years, current camperoony for 17 of those and never knew about them. Thanks also to adrian. It is a bit of a way, but they look like good old fashioned, skilled engineers who w...

Rolling road recommendation
Just got some (nearly) new twin 40 webers to install. Can anybody recommend a knowledgeable air-cooled engineer with rolling road set up near to Shrewsbury?

Re: LED Headlights
Thanks. This is certainly something to bear in mind for the future. I want to look at getting the twin headlight set up. Already done the wiring upgrade with 4 relays and a warning buzzer, but fancy a bit better vision during the winter.

Hi, has anybody fitted these, know if they can be fitted or fitted something similar? https://www.getoffroad.com/land-rover/defender-parts/lighting/headlamps/g05-001-003-led-full-halo-headlights-to-fit-defender?gclid=Cj0KEQjw6LXIBRCUqIjXmdKBxZUBEiQA_f50Ps2IU-gJYIuV-atqjI_Dn5RRPQV9u3mFfsQKIo8hCssaAs7...

Re: Are water cooled and air cooled drive shafts same?
Thanks bigherb. Looks like I will have to look out for some secondhand w/c shafts then. Defo not wheel bearings, one of the first things I checked.

Are water cooled and air cooled drive shafts same?
Reason for asking, is that I have a water-cooled box on a cu engine which works well. Keep getting knocking on cornering, but new cv joints. Grabbing shafts and moving side to side they knock against the wheel end which I presume will be the hub.
Up down movement is negligible.

Re: Whining Gearbox
Thanks G Dub52. I get it under acceleration only and I can't "feel" any roughness or grinding. I suppose part and parcel of having an old tin box like these is having something to worry about.

Re: Gear problem..
I had this problem previously where the bracket holding the gear selector linkage rod on the side of the gearbox dropped a little bit because of loose bolts. This caused the nylon ball on the end of the gearbox selector to stick in the socket when it had been put into gear. An easy fix if that is th...

Whining Gearbox
Just brought a "fully rebuilt" DH gearbox to replace one with sticking 4th to 3rd. Apparently hadn't been fitted since a rebuild at Bristol Transmissions in 2014. Fitted with new clutch kit. Fettled with the linkage and it goes into gear a treat. Nice slick change. Only issue is it has a w...
