Yeah, it does squeak quite a lot when running. Sometimes more than others but something I noticed. Will investigate that, thanks

You don't need 25mm of displacement, 10mm is plenty, but you do need a longish leg to reach inside the pump to the piston. If the leg's not long enough, just tape a bit of wire to it to make it longer. I use the depth gauge on my vernier caliper. With care it's accurate enough. Thanks, good to know...

I repaired mine by carefully grinding around the crimped joint and using a piece from a car inner tube of all things. Dan, that's really helpful. It may not come to that as it might be working, I just never remember seeing it moving so assuming not. Currently in the process of replacing a couple of glow plugs but once they're in i'll double check. .
